Paul Dray Are you worried about a loved one who has a substance use disorder? Is their drug or alcohol use affecting your health and daily life? The Kolmac CARES group can show you how a combination of science and kindness can help you and your loved one.

What should you know about Kolmac CARES?

Kolmac CARES (Community Access to Resources, Encouragement and Support) is a program that emphasizes evidence-based tools. Learn how to apply approaches that can provide better results than more popular tactics. Kolmac believes that kindness and understanding how people change is much more effective than detaching or tough love. Here is what you should know about the group.

Kolmac CARES is open to anyone in the community. The group is open to you even if you don’t have a family member in treatment at Kolmac, unlike our existing family and friends support groups. Our monthly drop-in sessions meet at our Columbia office on the first Thursday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

During these sessions, you will learn how to take care of yourself and your loved one who has a substance use disorder. You are on the front line as your loved one deals with their drug and/or alcohol problems. The Kolmac CARES group helps you learn to take care of yourself as you help your loved one. We understand the stress that you are under as you support your loved one’s decision to seek treatment. Our Family Resource Specialist, Paul Dray, CSC-AD will give you education, resources and support.

The Kolmac CARES group uses a variety of approaches

At the group, our leader will employ different evidence-based approaches. The first half of each session allows you to get to know your fellow group members and discuss the issues you are facing. The second half focuses on the different approaches, including Invitation to Change and CRAFT (Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training). These programs teach you to create conditions that lead to change. Paul also incorporates information based on traditional programs such as Al-Anon.
