Dr. George Kolodner designed and implemented the first intensive outpatient treatment program in the country in 1973. 50 years and 50,000 patients later, Kolmac still leads the way in addiction treatment.

Our model has been duplicated countless times because it works.

We recognize that for some people, life can’t stop for treatment. Commitments and responsibilities – to work, family, and school – don’t stop when recovery starts.

Treatment Tailored to Your Life

We design our programs to work for you and your specific needs. The treatment you need is available today, without waiting, without rearranging your entire schedule, and without putting the rest of your life on hold.

The Kolmac Difference: Patient-Centered, Individualized, Evidence-Based

Dr. Kolodner pioneered the IOP treatment model decades ago, but he didn’t keep it to himself. He trained healthcare professionals around the world in the best practices in addiction treatment. Our approach, grounded in data-driven practices and a mission to share what we learn with the recovery community, has earned us an impeccable reputation in addiction treatment. We break new ground every day, then look back and offer a helping hand to people we know can benefit from our life-changing approach to treatment and recovery.

The Kolmac Approach Works

Our belief in our programs is based on decades of experience and data. More importantly, it’s based on results. Our patients consistently show reduced rates of relapse to alcohol and drug use, compared to average rates of relapse, and our patient testimonials are filled with honest accounts from real people describing their recovery success stories.

Three Pillars of Success: A New Life in Recovery is Within Reach

PILLAR ONE: The Medical Model of Addiction

We view addiction as a chronic disease. Like other diseases, addiction includes both acute and chronic components. Acute components include visible symptoms and unhealthy, negative, life-interrupting behaviors that need immediate attention and resolution. Chronic components include biological changes that require medical intervention and patterns of thought and emotion that take time to recognize, understand, and address.

Many addiction treatment programs end after addressing the acute components of addiction. We think that’s a mistake, akin to discontinuing treatment for a patient with diabetes after administering a single dose of insulin.

Chronic diseases require ongoing, long-term care. The odds of relapsing without structured continuing care overseen by experience addiction professionals are far too high to ignore – so we don’t.

To reduce risk of relapse and improve outcomes, we treat both the acute and chronic components of addiction through our comprehensive detoxification, rehabilitation, and continuing care phases of treatment.

PILLAR TWO: Abstinence from Substances of Addiction

Evidence shows abstinence is an essential component of recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an essential component of recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD).

Many new patients ask us if they can continue to use substances safely, in moderation. Our answer is a simple “No” based in evidence and backed by decades of research.

With regards to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), we’ll share the views of one of the only other addiction treatment centers with as much experience as us, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation:

“The use of medications, both during treatment and as a way to support long-term recovery, is a key component of this approach. The Foundation views patients who take buprenorphine in this way as being abstinent and in recovery, just as patients in recovery from SUD would be considered in recovery if they were taking prescription opioids as prescribed by their doctor to treat pain after a major surgery.”

We work diligently with our patients to give them the tools they need to lead full and fulfilling lives without the use of addictive substances: the medication in MAT is only one approach that includes psychosocial support, education, family involvement, relapse prevention, and community/peer support.

PILLAR THREE: Comprehensive, Organized, Patented Relapse Prevention System

From the moment we start working with a patient we prioritize relapse prevention. We teach patients that relapse doesn’t come out of nowhere. Studies show relapse happens after a predictable flow of events. We’ve designed a unique methodology as we guide patients to recovery. We start with one question:

Why?

Once we understand – and once our patients understand – why they use addictive substances and how their addiction developed, we can get to work. We use an easy-to-understand diagram to help patients grasp the nature of their addiction and learn to recognize the patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that precede relapse. Patients who follow our system learn how to intervene early in the cycle – long before cravings or the urge to use substances occurs.
