Substance use disorder treatment at Kolmac: Evidence-based outpatient care
The clinical term for what was once called addiction is substance use disorder (SUD). This way of speaking about problematic substance use aligns with the medical model we’ve recognized for over 50 years.
Recognizing SUD as a disease of the brain and using appropriate clinical terms like “disordered use” helps us understand the condition more clearly, reduces stigma, and encourages more people to seek evidence-based treatment.

Understanding substance use disorder
SAMHSA describes a substance use disorder as a chronic brain disorder that causes a person to use substances repeatedly, despite the harm they cause.
Here’s the official definition:
“A substance use disorders occurs when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes clinically and functionally significant impairment, such as health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school, or home. Diagnosis of substance use disorder is based on evidence of impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological criteria.”
A substance use disorder can be mild or severe, based on the number of diagnostic criteria an individual meets. As NIDA explains, long-term drug use impairs brain functioning — particularly in areas that regulate judgment, decision-making, and impulse control — which is why early treatment matters.
In most cases, it’s possible to significantly reduce or reverse the harm caused by disordered substance use and support the mind and body toward healthier and more balanced states.

Substance use disorder and mental health
Many people experiencing a substance use disorder are also managing a co-occurring mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. At Kolmac, we treat both simultaneously with a dual diagnosis treatment approach. Treating only one condition while leaving the other unaddressed significantly reduces the likelihood of long-term stability.
