Advice for People Interested in Addiction Recovery with Dave and Jonathan
To wrap up #RecoveryMonth, Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health and Concerted Care Group thank our team members, Dave and Jonathan. They share their journey with us for people interested in taking their first step toward addiction recovery.
Dave:
I’m not a good advice giver, but in my experience, addiction is a disease that I owe myself the right to seek treatment for, and that it is just like anything else, like diabetes or cancer or any affliction. And that help is out there, that stigmas are being dropped, and that it is so okay to be in recovery. It’s really been a fun ride for me and I don’t want to change anything. I just want to continue my well-being.
Jonathan:
Just give it a try. Just give it a try. I remember when I went to the place where I got sober, it was a Monday, and the counselor at the time, she had done my admission and done my assessment and she said, “Oh, do you want to start tonight?” I said, “No, I’ll come back tomorrow or later that week.” But I’m very glad that I did start that night, and that was almost 10 years ago from that Monday, and I’ve been going ever since. I would just say just give it a try. Don’t give up before your miracle happens as they say.
As people, I’m a firm believer that we have everything that we need within ourselves, but sometimes we do just need a little bit of a push or addition by subtraction, right? In this case, it was eliminating substances and giving myself a chance, and giving myself time away from substances. Just to bring it back full circle, I think just giving oneself a chance has been big for me.
