Psychiatric evaluation and medication management at Kolmac
Both pieces of that work, an evaluation to understand what you’re experiencing and ongoing medication management to treat it, connect directly to the mental health conditions we treat here at Kolmac.
Psychiatry as part of whole-person care
Psychiatry at Kolmac is one pillar of an integrated model that treats mental health and substance use together, under one roof and a single plan. Your psychiatric provider is part of the team shaping your care, with a direct view of how you’re responding in therapy and where medication might help.
SAMHSA’s guidance on integrated behavioral health highlights coordinated psychiatric and therapeutic care as a fundamental standard. This means you don’t have to rebuild your history from scratch when you come to a medication appointment.
Your psychiatric provider at Kolmac is already aware of what has been coming up in therapy, what’s getting better, and what isn’t. The shared picture helps make medication decisions more accurate and speeds up adjustments when changes are necessary.
At Kolmac, we believe that medication and therapy usually work better together than either does by itself. When a single team handles both, changes occur immediately instead of weeks later when different providers eventually align.
What Kolmac’s psychiatry services include
Our psychiatric care covers the full arc, from the initial assessment through ongoing adjustment as your treatment progresses.
Psychiatric evaluation
A psychiatric evaluation is the appointment where a provider looks at what you’ve been experiencing and how it’s impacted your life, then works with you toward a diagnosis and a plan. At Kolmac, it’s where everything begins.
The American Psychiatric Association’s guidelines for psychiatric evaluation of adults set the clinical standard for that assessment, covering current symptoms, treatment history, substance use, and medical background. Together, these elements form an accurate diagnosis.
Medication management
Medication management is the ongoing care that follows an evaluation, where your provider prescribes what you need and makes adjustments based on how you respond.
Medication management is the ongoing work that follows an evaluation. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication and monitor how you respond. Finding the right medication or combination is usually a process of careful adjustment.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, psychiatric medications are usually more effective when paired with psychotherapy, and while a few work within days, most take several weeks before you notice a difference. Your provider stays with you through that stretch, watching for side effects and fine-tuning along the way.
For people managing substance use, medication support can also include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), integrated into the wider plan.
Psychiatry across levels of care
Wherever you are in treatment, psychiatric support scales to match. It’s present at every level of care Kolmac offers, calibrated to how much structure you need.
Within our intensive outpatient program (IOP), your group and individual therapy run alongside psychiatric care, so your treatment team informs medication decisions based on their weekly observations. In our partial hospitalization program (PHP), where care is more intensive, psychiatric involvement is correspondingly closer, with more frequent contact suited to people moving through a difficult period.
Whatever the level, your psychiatric provider stays close to your therapy. They make medication decisions based on your progress and ensure the plan remains consistent as your needs change.
Virtual psychiatry
Seeing a psychiatric provider doesn‘t always mean coming into an office. Kolmac offers psychiatric evaluation and medication management through telehealth options, so you can meet with your provider from a private space at home or anywhere you’re able to connect securely.
For many people, virtual visits clear the practical hurdles that make consistent care hard to sustain, whether that’s a demanding work schedule or a long drive to yet another appointment. You receive the same care either way, and you can switch between in-person and virtual visits depending on what a given week allows.
Psychiatry and co-occurring conditions
When a mental health condition and substance use occur together, psychiatric care becomes both more important and harder to get right. Medication choices have to account for both conditions at once, since a treatment that helps one can sometimes complicate the other.
Our psychiatric providers work within Kolmac’s dual diagnosis treatment, talking directly with the therapists and counselors involved in your care so decisions about medication reflect your whole clinical situation.
