How to Start a Conversation About Mental Health

Mental health affects every one of us, yet for many, it’s still one of the hardest topics to talk about. Whether you’re struggling yourself or worried about a loved one, starting a conversation can feel uncomfortable, even scary. But the truth is, talking about mental health saves lives.

At Kolmac, we believe that creating space for open, judgment-free dialogue is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against stigma, isolation, and untreated behavioral health conditions.

Why Mental Health Conversations Matter

When mental health challenges go unspoken, they often go untreated. Silence fuels shame. Shame fuels avoidance. And avoidance leads to worsening symptoms or even crisis.

Talking about mental health:
• Breaks down stigma
• Encourages people to seek help earlier
• Makes others feel seen, supported, and less alone
• Builds a culture of empathy and awareness in families, workplaces, and communities

How to Start the Conversation

Whether you’re opening up about your own struggles or checking in on someone else, here are a few practical ways to begin

✅ 1. Choose the Right Time and Setting

Start the conversation in a private, comfortable space where the person feels safe. Avoid doing it in a rush or around others. Try:
“I’ve noticed you’ve been quieter than usual lately. How have you been feeling?”
“I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed myself lately. Have you experienced that too?”

✅ 2. Lead with Care, Not Judgment

Use open-ended, non-judgmental language. Avoid diagnosing or assuming. Try:
“I’ve noticed you’ve been quieter than usual lately. How have you been feeling?”
“I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed myself lately. Have you experienced that too?”

✅ 3. Normalize the Experience

Reassure them that mental health challenges are common and nothing to be ashamed of. Try:
“A lot of people struggle with anxiety or depression. It’s completely okay to talk about it.”

✅ 4. Offer Support, Not Solutions

You don’t need to fix it. Just listening, validating, and offering to help find support is enough. Try:
“I’m here for you, no matter what. If you want, I can help you find someone to talk to.”

✅ 5. Know Where to Turn

Point them to trusted resources like Kolmac. Let them know professional help is available and that they don’t have to go through it alone.
