Facing the consequences of addiction inspired Anand to get treatment

Recovery after relapse

Overcoming Addiction After Relapse – Anand’s Story

At 29, Anand is clean and sober. However, it hasn’t always been this way. “I had problems with alcohol and some drugs since I was 17 or 18. Two years ago, things went south quickly and there were lots of consequences for my actions. Life was becoming unmanageable,” he says.

There wasn’t one event that inspired him to seek treatment. Instead, it was a lot of little things. “I had low self-esteem, my relationships were ruined, and I was turning into somebody I did not want to be,” he explains.

Starting addiction treatment at Kolmac

When Anand came to Kolmac for the first time, he was overwhelmed because everything was new to him. “I had never been to formal treatment, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m outgoing, but I was nervous to talk at first because I wasn’t used to talking about deeper topics,” he recalls.

As time went on, Anand found that he enjoyed the treatment structure at Kolmac. However, when his treatment was finished, he decided not to do continuing care. “This was a mistake on my part,” he says.

Coming back for round two at Kolmac

According to Anand, “I wasn’t serious the first time I came to Kolmac, but I knew that Kolmac was there for me when I was ready to go back and get serious about recovery.”

During his second time in treatment, Anand realized how important continuing care is. “Continuing care is great because my group gave me support and made me be accountable. The second time I went to treatment at Kolmac, continuing care played a huge role in my sustained recovery and commitment to staying sober,” he says.

Ways that Kolmac stands out from other treatment centers

Something that stood out to Anand was the group members’ willingness to share their struggles. He was also impressed by the clinicians. “The clinicians are very passionate, and they really care about you. They are always respectful, but they also push you to be your best,” he says.

Anand highly recommends Kolmac for addiction treatment. According to him, “Their treatment structure just makes sense. The structure helps you feel comfortable to share and has an educational aspect to it.”

Thoughts on addiction recovery and sobriety

Recovery wasn’t an easy journey for Anand, but it was worth the work. “Recovery is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Addiction wants to keep you alone and in your own head. You need to find support and education. You also need people who have gone through it and caring clinicians to support you,” he explains.

Anand notices a drastic difference when looking at his life before and after treatment. “Before treatment, I was hollow and just going through the motions. I was always in fear and had no peace. I tried to quit on my own, but it didn’t work. It felt like there was no way out. But now, I see a drastic change. Every area of my life has improved. I also feel a peace that I haven’t felt in I don’t remember how long,” he says.

The biggest thing that Anand wants people to know is that recovery is possible. He mentions a quote from one of his favorite Stephen King movies. “Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

According to Anand, “Before coming to Kolmac, I had very little hope of battling the disease of addiction. Kolmac and the community support meetings on Friday nights showed me that people do recover and can live an amazing life in recovery. Kolmac saved my life and I would recommend it to anyone. It provides an amazing foundation for your recovery and ongoing support.”
