Substance use intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Kolmac

Deciding to address a substance use problem is rarely a single moment. More often, it’s a gradual recognition that what you’ve been doing isn’t working, and that the next step needs to be something more than willpower alone.

Intensive outpatient treatment exists for that moment. It’s structured enough to create real momentum, frequent enough to reinforce change, and designed to work alongside the life you’re already living — not in place of it.

At Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health, substance use IOP gives you consistent clinical support, built around your schedule, so that treatment becomes part of your week rather than an interruption to it.

What is substance use IOP?

Kolmac’s substance use intensive outpatient program is a structured outpatient program offered multiple times a week. You attend scheduled sessions that include therapy, medical oversight, and skill-building work focused on substance use.

This care level serves individuals needing more than occasional support but not a full-day regimen. It creates a steady framework that fosters progress through repeated engagement rather than short, isolated sessions.

Kolmac delivers IOP within a coordinated outpatient system. Your care remains connected across therapy, medication management, and any additional services that are part of your treatment plan.

Who is substance use IOP right for?

Consider IOP when regular substance use has made day-to-day functioning harder, or when trying to stop by yourself hasn’t been enough. During your assessment, we’ll look at what you’re experiencing now and work with you to determine whether this level of care is the right fit.

IOP can also be appropriate if you’ve recently completed detox or another level of care and need continued structure as you move forward. At this stage, support needs to be frequent enough to reinforce change, while still allowing you to stay engaged in your responsibilities.

If you need a more structured level of support, we may recommend a substance use partial hospitalization program (PHP) instead, which would involve more time in treatment daily.

What Kolmac’s substance use IOP looks like

IOP at Kolmac is structured around consistency. Each component of the program is connected — therapy, medication management, and skill-building work together rather than operating independently. You’ll know what to expect week to week, and your care team will adjust the plan as your needs evolve.

Program schedule and duration

IOP at Kolmac typically involves multiple sessions per week over several weeks, with a defined course of care. These can be scheduled during the day or evening; the arrangement allows for regular participation while you maintain your job, education, or other responsibilities.

The program follows a structured schedule, with adjustments based on how your progress develops over time. Some patients move through more quickly, while others benefit from staying longer as they continue building their stability. We adapt your schedule and duration as circumstances evolve.

Group and individual therapy

Group therapy is a central part of IOP. We structure sessions around specific topics, including:

  • How substance use develops
  • How to recognize patterns
  • How to respond differently in situations that would have previously led to substance use
  • Sessions are active. You’re taking part, practicing your responses, and working through actual situations with guidance from trained clinicians. These individual sessions provide an additional

Medication assisted therapy (MAT)

For patients who may benefit, medication-assisted treatment is available through the IOP. Medications are used to help reduce cravings and support your continuing treatment as you work through the program.

MAT is not handled separately at Kolmac. It’s integrated into your overall care, keeping medication and clinical oversight aligned.

Before IOP: Medical detox options

Some patients need to address withdrawal before beginning IOP. Kolmac offers a virtual detox that allows you to complete this step under medical supervision while remaining at home.

This process includes clinical monitoring, medication when appropriate, and regular check-ins to ensure your safety. After managing withdrawal, you can transition directly into IOP without a gap in your care.
