Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) at Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health
IOP is available at all Kolmac locations across Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, with in-person, virtual, and hybrid options.
What is an intensive outpatient program?
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a structured level of care that provides several hours of clinical treatment per week without requiring you to live at a treatment facility. IOP falls between a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and standard outpatient care on the continuum of treatment.
According to ASAM, IOP is classified as Level 2.1, suitable for individuals requiring ongoing clinical assistance while maintaining the ability to handle daily life tasks independently. Research consistently shows that IOP produces outcomes comparable to inpatient rehabilitation for many patients.
At Kolmac, IOP combines group therapy, individual counseling, psychiatric services, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and family participation into a single integrated treatment plan.
Our two IOP tracks
Kolmac offers two IOP tracks so your care is focused on what you need.

How long is IOP, and what does it look like?
Kolmac’s IOP runs 3 to 4 sessions per week, typically totaling 9 to 12 hours of structured treatment. Most patients participate for 10 to 15 weeks, though the duration varies based on individual progress and clinical need.
Program sessions are scheduled in blocks that accommodate most work and school schedules, with evening availability at most locations.
IOP vs. PHP vs. outpatient: Which is right for you?
| Level of care | Hours per week | Best for |
| Partial hospitalization (PHP) | 30 hours | People who need intensive daily routine, have started treatment recently or have other conditions needing careful observation |
| Intensive outpatient (IOP) | 9 to 12 hours | People who are stable enough to manage daily responsibilities alongside treatment, are stepping down from PHP or are entering treatment for the first time |
| Outpatient treatment (OP) | 1 to 2 session/week | People maintaining progress after IOP or managing mild-to-moderate conditions |
Many patients begin in PHP and transition to IOP as they stabilize. If you’re unsure where to start, our clinical team will determine the right level of care through an initial evaluation.
