Learn about Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health Centers and our outpatient approach
One unique aspect of Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health Centers is our outpatient, measurement-based approach to drug and alcohol treatment. The inpatient model provides treatment in a setting that removes the patient from their daily life, job and family. However, Kolmac allows patients to live at home and keep working during treatment and recovery.
In 1973, George Kolodner MD, our Chief Innovation Officer, designed the first intensive outpatient (IOP) program in the United States. Kolmac has implemented his highly effective approach to help more than 30,000 patients recover from alcohol and drug addiction.
Our measurement-based approach provides comprehensive care
Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health Centers considers the biological, psychological and social aspects of addiction when our team works with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan.
Like the American Medical Association, Kolmac views addiction as a chronic disease, much like high blood pressure or diabetes. Unlike an acute ailment that requires quick treatment, chronic conditions require long-term care and follow-up. While inpatient programs typically treat the acute aspects of addiction, Kolmac also addresses the chronic issues of drug and alcohol addiction, including any underlying problems.
Patients benefit from intensive outpatient care
Our patients live in the real world. They have jobs, families and responsibilities. IOP allows them to recover and heal in an affordable, highly effective environment while continuing to live daily life.
Not only is outpatient treatment more affordable, published studies prove that outpatient treatment is just as effective as inpatient treatment. Outpatient addiction treatment has another benefit. Clinicians and staff at Kolmac Integrated Behavioral Health Centers help people deal with challenging situations in their daily life by providing ongoing support.
Our experienced teams help patients from all walks of life
The knowledgeable teams at our treatment facilities understand every aspect of addiction, from medical issues and psychiatric problems to environmental triggers and stress. Our physicians and clinicians have a variety of professional degrees and certifications, along with years of direct patient experience.
Most of our patients are employed adults, ages 18 and older. They are racially and economically diverse and work in a variety of professions. Kolmac also serves specialty groups when one of our facilities has enough patients with a similar focus. For example, we have longstanding groups for gay men in Washington, D.C., and a group for medical professionals in Baltimore.
