Title

  • Double Edged Sword: The Use of Medications to Treat Addiction

Description

  • Medications have historically been a mainstay of medical treatment.  Addiction medicine has relatively few useful medications and those that have been available have sometimes complicated rather than improved patients’ substance use disorders.

This presentation will review the basics of using medications in these disorders as well as identifying past and current controversies, such as the use of stimulants, benzodiazepines, and buprenorphine.  The goals will be to provide accurate information about generally accepted ways to use medications and also to stimulate discussion about those areas where there is less agreement.
